The Relief Chair

Ben K. Mickus earns major cred with his latest creation, ‘The Relief Chair.’ The chair is a sculpted assembly of rapidly-renewable felt sheets, supplanting foams, upholstery and anything applied.  The cascading edges of the felt sheets create an integral pattern with both a visual and tactile effect. The Relief Chair’s contours invite the user to sit back and relax. The body of the chair is a layered assembly of medium-density wool felt sheets, adhered to each other and sleeved over an internal steel frame. The felt body and frame rest on break-formed stainless steel legs, with a satin finish. The composition juxtaposes weight and weightlessness with an intrepid stance. The chair makes a statement in any room or lounge.

From the architects: This single family residence located in the Gaslight District of Manhattan Beach is one in a series of homes commissioned by Kuhlhaus Development, LLC and produced by the award-winning Los Angeles based Design/Build firm Lean Arch, Inc. Our partnership is committed to responsible development – redefining the modern home in response to concerns regarding energy consumption, land-use and the environment. This solar powered home features 4 bedrooms with 4 bathrooms, powder room, kitchen by Valcucine, open living and dining areas, family room, recreation room with a wet bar, walk-in wine cellar, and laundry room. The open plan and large glass sliding pocket doors create both visual and physical continuity between the interior and exterior. Outdoor patio and deck space adjacent to the kitchen, the living and family rooms, and the master bedroom enhance the quality of each space and allow for flexibility in their use. A perforated metal stair, metal panel siding, radiant floor heating and a 4.3 KW array of solar panels on the roof are a nod to “industrial chic”.

When weather is a factor, the Helios stormproof lighter is the answer. The lighter boasts a high-temperature internal flame that withstands winds as high as 80 mph, letting you light the campfire even when conditions seem bleak. Plus, when the lid is closed, the butane-fueled lighter is completely waterproof, so you needn’t worry about the Helios becoming waterlogged during a rainstorm. Add in a Piezo electric switch that’s reliable for at least 30,000 ignitions and you have an ideal lighter for any outdoor application. As a final bonus, Brunton made it easy to fill the Helios with high-performance Bruntane fuel using the company’s FuelTool accessory.

driving activity reporter Driving Activity Reporter

This is the device that monitors a car’s activity and provides a detailed report of places, routes, and speeds traveled. It uses a 16-channel GPS receiver to track the movements of the car to which it is attached (internally or externally, using the device’s built-in magnet for covert purposes), storing locations on its built-in flash memory that holds up to 100 hours of driving activity. Removed from the car, the reporter connects to your computer’s USB port, and the included software allows you to view the time, date, and precise locations visited–even how fast a driver was traveling–using animated digital street maps. The data can also be examined using Google Earth (a free application from the Internet) for precise satellite pictures of locations visited. Durable, water-resistant frame enables operation between -15° to 185° F. Two AAA lithium batteries (required) provide up to three weeks of operation; device will enter sleep mode if it does not detect car movement within two minutes.
