Smart Way to Soften New Sheets

potterybarn2 300x194 Smart Way to Soften New SheetsWe have all bought new sheets at some point in our life, and we have all put them into the wash soon as we got home. But don’t you hate it when you get the new sheets out of the dryer hoping for that warm and fuzzy feeling, then the rude awakening of sand paper. Yeah good times. Well here are 5 steps we came across from our friends over at SundryBuzz.

1. Wash them on the hottest setting
2. Use no detergent (the idea is that new sheets have chemicals on them and detergent just makes it worse)
3. Add lots of fabric softener
4. Dump in a cup or so of baking soda during the wash cycle
5. Take them out of the dryer as soon as they are dry, rather than leaving them to sit in there for a while

  1. I tried this method, and unfortunately, it didn’t work. The sheets are still scratchy, and therefore unusable. My daughter has allergies that make her itch, and scratchy sheets make it impossible for her to sleep. Her old soft sheets are worn to pieces.

Has anyone else noticed that it seems to be impossible to GET soft sheets any more?

  2. Yes…even the expensive sheet shops are selling scratchy sheets. I remember when sheets were sheets…and expensive sheets were luxury. Now it is a real trick to choosing the right thread count and cotton mix…too complicated.

I have also read that vinegar in the first rinse cycle can work (with no detergents), I will be trying this on my baby’s scratchy sheets this afternoon.
