B.P.A., or Bisphenol-a, is a primary ingredient in polycarbonate plastics like Lexan, classic Nalgene bottles, hard plastic cups, formula bottles, and linings of aluminum cans. (Nalgene recently announced that they will be phasing out the polycarbonate bottles which made them so famous in response to consumer concerns about BPA.) Research from the University of Cincinnati shows that bottles made of polycarbonate plastic can release a endocrine-disrupting chemical up to 55 times faster when exposed to hot water. Head of Texas A&M University’s Environmental Occupational health department adds, opting for glass or stainless-steel bottles is the best way to avoid BPA.
