7 Reasons Why the Gym is Better Than Therapy

A typical gym membership costs about $300 a year. If you go to a therapist, once a week for $100 an hour, that’s $5200 per year. If anything, the gym is a discount stress-reliever, far cheaper than paying someone to hear you talk.

Another benefit: the gym doesn’t charge for the hour. If you need ninety minutes to sort out a particularly stressful day, she won’t mind and she won’t charge you extra. If you want to go a few times a week, or even twice on the same day, that’s fine too. In some places, gyms are even open 24 hours, so you can resolve stress at any time of day.

2 – The Gym Won’t Give Advice

At first, this doesn’t seem like a benefit. The reason you pay a therapist is to get advice on your problems, right? But, sometimes it can be. Many times you go looking for advice, you really just want to think. You want an empathetic ear to hear your worries while you think about what to do.

I can’t say the gym is empathetic (she’s pretty unfeeling). But, she doesn’t give you advice. So if you want to think a situation over for an hour before coming to a decision, she’s patient.

3 – You Won’t Get Fat

The gym does double-duty. She helps you keep your stresses to a minimum, and she keeps you in shape. That’s the kind of package deal you can’t get lying on a couch.

Doggie Doorbell

Posted 21 August 2008 | By Derrick | Categories: home, pets | No Comments

doggie Doggie DoorbellAnimals aren’t known for their subtlety.  When one of  mine wants to go outside, the process begins with prancing and running back and forth to the door, which quickly escalates to muttering, growling, slobbering, whining, followed by full scale barking and jumping. When none of that works, I get the “freeze”, the pose that says, “I’m gonna’ do it right here, right now”. So we have a system, and I get their point. But for those of you with more “reserved” animals (go ahead, you can say “smarter”, “better trained”), there’s the Smart Pet Doorbell.

Smart Way to Soften New Sheets

potterybarn2 300x194 Smart Way to Soften New SheetsWe have all bought new sheets at some point in our life, and we have all put them into the wash soon as we got home. But don’t you hate it when you get the new sheets out of the dryer hoping for that warm and fuzzy feeling, then the rude awakening of sand paper. Yeah good times. Well here are 5 steps we came across from our friends over at SundryBuzz.

1. Wash them on the hottest setting
2. Use no detergent (the idea is that new sheets have chemicals on them and detergent just makes it worse)
3. Add lots of fabric softener
4. Dump in a cup or so of baking soda during the wash cycle
5. Take them out of the dryer as soon as they are dry, rather than leaving them to sit in there for a while

Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Tuesday

ig294 perseid meteor gamble 02 300x225 Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks TuesdayThe annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to put on a good display of shooting stars in the pre-dawn hours Tuesday. The annual shower begins as a trickle in mid-July and will continue to spark a handful of shooting stars for several nights to come. But Earth passes through the densest part of the stream Aug. 12 at around 7 a.m. ET (1100 GMT). The moon will set around 1:30 a.m. local time (regardless of your location), leaving the sky dark for a few hours of optimal meteor watching across much of North America.

Meteor watching is easy. Find the darkest location you can, away from porch lights and other lighting. Use a blanket or lounge chair to lie back and scan as much of the sky as possible. Allow 15 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. Binoculars and telescopes are of no use, as the meteors move too swiftly. Image VIA Space.com
